Chapter 5
She checked her cell again on her way home from work there were three missed called from Damon. His calls and texts had gotten less frequent and more sporadic as the week passed. She had to admit to herself that she was impressed by his perseverance. She never had a man chase after her before and was unsure how to handle the unwarranted attention. Trina still felt that her best bet was just to ignore the man until he got fed up and went away. She deleted the texts without reading them. She was afraid of what they might say and that she would somehow be swayed to his side by the texts. Her best defense was her offense, she had to stay the course if she wanted to come out the winner.
Alexis said she would be there in the next thirty minutes and she would bring her favorite brand of merlot. Trina decided to cook a shrimp fettuccini with steamed vegetables. It wouldn’t take long to prepare and would be ready by the time Alexis got home from work. For dessert she would make some brownies with a scoop pf vanilla ice cream. Since she and Alexis shared the same chocolate sweet tooth. It was Alexis’s birthday and she was still pretty miffed about Trina not allowing her to have a birthday party at their house. To make it up to her Trina had called Alexis to let her know that she would be preparing a special dinner for her on her birthday.
They had not been on good speaking terms since their argument. After the dinner Alexis would go clubbing with her high school friends. She had invited Trina but she politely declined as she hadn’t been feeling well of late. She promised Alexis that they could go clubbing on another night when she was feeling much better. This was graciously accepted by Alexis as she felt Trina could be a bit of party pooper when she refused requests to dance and didn’t want to loosen up amongst her friends. Since Trina had gone to all that trouble to make her special dinner this was her way of extending the olive branch and letting peace reign between them.
It would be good for them to do some quality bonding since they had both been busy with their jobs and hadn’t seen much of each other recently. Alexis reached home more than fifty minutes late. Trina was upset and very hungry at having to wait to eat their meal together. She had to constantly remind herself that it was Alexis’ birthday so she needed to keep her temper in check and try not to throw a tantrum. She found it very hard to do so because when Alexis walked through the door she wasn’t remorseful or in the least bit apologetic. Alexis offered no excuse as to why she was late for dinner as if Trina’s feelings didn’t matter. This ticked Trina off even more.
“Hey Alexis you can go and take a shower while I reheat the dinner in a few minutes.”
Alexis’ voice carried from the bedroom as she quickly shed her clothes and stepped into the shower. “It feels good to home. The traffic was hectic and the rain weather made the day even more miserable.”
“Sorry to hear that.” Trina said as she decided to chop up some tomatoes, carrots and cucumbers for a vegetable salad while she waited.
“I hope your day at work was much better than mine, how did it go?”
“Well it’s the summer holidays so you know that is when the business is at its peak and we get a high influx of customers. It was hectic juggling between clients and each wanted their work done ahead of schedule. It’s really boring stuff so I’ll spare you the unnecessary details.”
“Good grief! That bad huh.”
“Yeah. Hey Alexis can you open that bottle of merlot that you brought home.” Asked Trina in a bid to get Alexis to shut up so they can start eating.
Alexis poured the wine when everything was set and sat down to eat dinner in silence. Trina after several mouthfuls noticed that Alexis wasn’t eating her food and was already on her third glass of wine.
“Not hungry?”
“Well Trina, I got a surprise invitation to lunch by that hot new guy at work and I’m still bloated from the meal.”

“Why didn’t you say something earlier instead of torturing me by making me starve while I waited on you to come home? I don’t even know if the food tastes good because I was so hungry damn it.”
“Sorry I didn’t spend any time seriously thinking about it. Just got caught up in the moment I guess. There was no way I was gonna turn down that lunch date when I had been working so hard to get him to notice me all week. Forgive me for not wanting to disappoint you by telling you I’m not hungry when I know you put a lot of effort into preparing the meal and have been practically singing about it all week.”
“Thanks for finally considering my feelings. I guess.”
“Well, the few bites I’ve managed to stuff down of your cooking was fantastic. It all tastes so delicious, the meat is tender and the vegetables crisp and cooked to perfection. I’ll definitely be looking forward to warming up my leftovers for breakfast tomorrow.”
Trina beamed from the small praise. Alexis finally managed to butter her up for the upcoming conversation about Damon. It was so hard to gauge Trina’s mood swings when these days she was miserable half the time. She had to know that Trina’s emotions were somewhat stable before she brought up this difficult topic as unhappy Trina was a miserable person to cope and live with. Alexis waited until Trina had finished eating before she broached the subject. She didn’t want to risk giving Trina indigestion just by mentioning Damon’s name. She felt like she had to be careful with whatever she said around Trina as she had become so defensive of late whenever the subject of Damon came up. She wanted to get on his good side despite his pestering her about Trina. He wanted her to intercede on his behalf with Trina and find out what was really going on in her head since she refused to return his calls.
