Chapter 4

It had been a few days since she had last seen Damon in person. He had called her to let her know that he had been called out of the country last minute to finalize a business deal. However, when he came back Friday he wanted to spend some time with her. She realized that the date would clash with her therapy so she thought it best to call Dr. Benjamin’s office and reschedule after ironing it out with Dr. Benjamin’s office assistant she informed Trina that Dr. Benjamin wanted to exchange words with her. She braced herself for another impending lecture and hoped that Dr. Benjamin would try to talk her out of skipping the session.

As much as she didn’t mind the skype conversations she had with Damon she longed to see him in person and he was always so busy she had to take what she could get. This didn’t sit well with her because she feared when Damon’s interest waned their relationship would fall apart. She constantly fought the inner voice that implored her to end the relationship before she got too attached to Damon. Stick to the skype dates that voice would say that way she would be kept safe from the growing s*xual tension between them. Attraction was one thing, acting on it was another. She really could have used some wisdom from her Grandmother where Damon was concerned, as her Grandma always had a discerning eye when it came to no good men.

She definitely did not want to break her steadfast dating rule not to sleep with the guy before the fourth date but things were so hot with Damon she felt in the given situation she wouldn’t be able to help herself. She felt that when she slept with a guy early on in the relationship it never ever worked out because the guy would not respect her and treat her poorly in terms of just using her for s*x nothing more. The only other thing that truly bothered her about Damon was that he was a control freak and he relished having power and authority over others. Trina had no interest going after money under the pretext of networking and trying to make it by any means possible in the art world. Although women like Alexis might not mind or have a problem with that kind of lifestyle as long as the money kept coming but Trina valued her independence.

“Hello Ms. Sayers.”

“Hey Doc, sorry to cancel our session on such short notice. I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it to our usual evening session.”

“So I heard, why is that Ms. Sayers?” Dr. Benjamin questioned.

“It’s because I’ve decided to finally take your advice and go out on a date and enjoy myself. Unfortunately that was the only time available for my date.”

“That is fantastic news Trina, who is the lucky guy?”

“His name is Damon Arlington. He is an acquaintance of Alexis my friend and roommate. We met at a gala about a month ago that Alexis asked me to attend with her. A week later we met up for ice cream and tonight we are going to try a new restaurant that just opened recently.”

“Sounds pretty good so far, tell me more about him please.”

“According to Alexis he’s like the George Clooney of the art world. He is a billionaire that enjoy what he does and has had a lot of luck being an entrepreneur and jack of all trades. He makes a living buying and selling priceless works of art and also dabbles a bit in real estate.”

“Sounds like an interesting guy I would like to meet him some day but I also hear a hitch in your voice that suggest something about your situation is not quite right, is there something you are not telling me?”

“Well Doc you know I normally date either my age group or five years older max. Well, he is forty six, I never thought I would date anyone that old in this lifetime. I’m just worried that this will be a waste of time because we will end up not having much in common or his friends and family might not approve of him dating someone with my background and history.”

“Is the man himself concerned with what others think?”

“Not that I know of Dr. Benjamin, he always has this air of confidence that can be grating on the nerves at times, his arrogance knows no bounds. He’s very intelligent and opinionated and marches to the beat of his own drum. His enemies would have to dig very deep to find a weakness in him.”

“It sounds like you are a little bit in awe of him.”

“I can’t help it Doc he is a very charismatic man.”

“Well then isn’t it about time you do the same as this Damon, instead of worrying about what others think about the way you want to live your life. Never has anyone’s life ever been without challenges it’s all about how you embrace and react to the challenges that may come along. Life is not without risk, sometimes you need to take a chance to make it in life. My advice is to take it slowly with this guy and let things progress naturally. Do you have any other concerns about him?”

“Alexis wants recognition for her art work and keeps pressuring me to get him to be her sponsor. I feel cornered like I don’t know him well enough to ask him to cover something of that magnitude but Alexis feels otherwise. Her insistence that I do so has cast a strain on our friendship so I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. She says he’s smitten with me and will do anything to please me and I should take advantage of his generosity before the relationship gets stale. The next thing I find is that he is a celebrity in his own right. People will come up to us out of nowhere to do small talk, or chat business, or take pictures. I love my privacy and I’m not sure I can adjust to being in the arms of a man who is always recognized wherever we go and drawn into the spotlight.”

“My advice to you is to ignore Alexis for the time being or tell her to mind her own business. Just concentrate on your blossoming relationship with this guy, don’t do anything that makes you feel guilty or uncomfortable around him. Don’t succumb to peer pressure and let Alexis feel that she has a say in how you want to run your life, as you like to tell me you are your own person, so think for yourself so that you can have peace of mind. If she doesn’t quit her annoyance or keeps harping on you needing to help her, another option is to inform Damon of her request. Let him ease the pressure off of you. Whatever decision he makes Alexis would just have to abide by it, it’s not like you have the power to control minds.
