Chapter 5

The sun caused by the breaking of dawn woke Reade from her state of exhaustion. The tears that she had spent the night shedding made her throat thick and raspy. As she yawned, Reade rubbed her neck in an attempt to head some of the irritation and she winced.

The sound of Reade’s father’s truck roared from outside and she emitted a sigh of relief as she heard it fade into the distance. She thought of loathsome ways she could get back at him. She thought of unleashing Jackson’s monstrous form on him. He would be out for revenge, and unsuspecting as he got torn apart. Though deep inside, she knew that wouldn’t make her depressive state any worse. She was still locked in her bedroom.

As Reade pulled from her bed, she heard a tinkering at the door that was like metal being rattled into a keyhole. She wondered if her father had returned to set her free, though when the door popped open and revealed more light; it wasn’t her father she saw.

Scott.

There was a boyish grin that curved the corner of his mouth and he gestured towards the locked door.

“I’m being kept prisoner.” Reade explained, relief flooding through her, along with something else; that same hunger she felt yesterday. “My Father.”

Scott stalked forward and set the key he had found on her dresser, the presence of him in her room doing unruly things to her hormones.

“I’m guessing the little chat with daddy didn’t go well,” He said mockingly, brushing a stray curl of red from her face. She felt a blush warm her cheeks. “What a shame.”

Embarrassed, she turned away, though he only led her face back, his eyes greedy for more of her.

“What are you doing here?” Reade asked in a small voice.

“Finishing what we started yesterday,” He answered truthfully before taking her in that very moment. “That’s what I’m doing here.”

It was as if they were supposed to be that way. Like they were born to find themselves in that very moment.

Reade sighed happily as Scott rolled off of her and pulled her against his chest. Her erratic breathing had calmed and she felt safe in the warmth of his embrace. She knew he would come for her and save her like she had done for him.
