The guard narrowed his gaze onto the paper in front of him and ran the pen down what seemed to be a list of some sort. He flipped the page a few times and even punched in a few keys on a computer sitting on the desk beside him. He shook his head. “I’m sorry, ma’am, I don’t have any visitors listed for that address. Nor do I have any alerts to the occupant going on any kind of vacation. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I’m unable to let you in. Can you please back your vehicle out so other cars can pass?”
Pam huffed as she did as she was told. A few cars drove by them before she pulled back up to the guard post. She had to try again. It wasn’t often that she couldn’t get her way from any man she encountered. “I apologize for being a pain in the ass, but can you please call the homeowner and let them know I’m here at the gate?”
“Ma’am, for one, we are only authorized to call homeowners for deliveries. Two, you don’t have anything to deliver,” the guard snapped. “Now please back up, turn around, and leave the property.
“Oh, I don’t think you want me to leave.” Pam winked while licking her lips. “I have something I can deliver to you at another time and place if you let us in. I swear we’ll be quick. Just want to feed the cat and get out of here.”
“Not to say that I’m not flattered, because I am.” The guard smiled. “It’s been awhile since a woman’s hit on me. After the men I’ve been dealing with, it’s a welcomed little anecdote. But still, I can’t let you in. I’m sorry. You’re going to have to call the homeowner yourself and have them put you on this list, either as a guest or new tenant. Outside of that, there’s nothing I can do.”
Phoebe couldn’t help but snicker as Pam’s face turned beet red. Pam tried her best to keep her composure as she tried one more time to get on the guard’s good side. “I apologize. That was inappropriate and uncalled for. I just don’t want to be the reason my friend loses their pet.”
“I completely understand, but if I let you in, I could lose my job. I’d much rather you friend’s cat die than me stop being able to feed my family. If you want to be the good friend you’re trying to be… CALL THEM and have them put you on the list. Until then I’m not letting you through and if you don’t leave I’m going to have to call the police.”
“Okay, okay,” Phoebe shouted from the passenger seat. “We’re going to go. I know that you know the cat story is full of sh*t. We were only trying to get in to see Lincoln Gold. We know he lives here. Just tell him he had some fans stop by.”
The guard smiled and sighed. “Sorry, ladies, definitely not letting any groupies in here. But just so you know Mr. Gold hasn’t lived here in some time. Only his uncle Mr. Banks comes in and out. Mr Gold doesn’t even visit this place. Try some other address because you won’t find him here.”
“Are you sure you can’t even let us get a picture of the house?” Pam whined, still trying to wear the guard down.
The frustration was steadily creeping across his face. “Now I’ve told you two more than enough and it’s time for you to go! NOW!”
Pam put the car in reverse and backed out of the entryway. She and Phoebe watched as a few cars crossed the barrier into the gated community. Now she wanted to get in just to see what the big deal was. “I wonder who else lives in there?”
“The way this guy is acting, he’s making it seem like Elvis is back there. He ain’t really dead, girl,” Phoebe cackled.
“You know if we take him at the same time, I can run and while he chases me you can sneak in and try to find the house,” Pam suggested mischievously.
“Haven’t we gotten ourselves into enough trouble today?” Phoebe said, wondering if Pam had forgotten they’d just gotten robbed earlier.
“I guess you’re right.” Pam sighed. “I just hate knowing that I couldn’t get something to go my way. If he was straight we would’ve been in there.”
“I’m sure.” Phoebe smiled. “Girl, let’s go. Besides, we can’t sneak in there anyway. Even if we could get passed the guard, we have no idea where we’re going. We have no idea what house we’re even looking for. Not to mention, places like this tend to have nosy neighbors making sure people like us, or worse, aren’t lurking around. I’m in no mood to get arrested today. I’ve spent enough time at the police station already.”
“Fine, let’s go. I’m sure you’ll figure this thing out. Are you ever going to tell Lincoln what’s going on? I mean it is his money,” Pam reasoned.

“I will. But right now I’m just not sure how honest he’s willing to be,” Phoebe told her. The women drove away from the gated community wondering what exactly was going on with Lincoln Gold. It plagued them even as they sat down to dinner at Phoebe’s house.
“Girl, I wonder what kind of mess he’s gotten himself into.” Pam shook her head.
“Please don’t say anything, Pam,” Phoebe begged her friend.
“What can I say?!” Pam exclaimed. “Oh yeah, Lincoln Gold has a failing business that’s supposed to be at an abandoned warehouse that we got robbed near trying to investigate it? Oh yeah, and he has an uncle living in a gated community? It just sounds like a useless relative mooching off their rich nephew. That’s not exactly newsworthy!”
“Well, when you say it like that, I guess it’s not. Maybe it just seems like it because I got out from behind my desk. I felt like a real Nancy Drew for a minute there.” Phoebe laughed.
