As he put the keys on the table, he took off the coat and sat in a chair. He didn’t know why but this was awfully similar to the times when he had come home from visiting Sally and ruffling her sheets. He poured himself a cold whiskey and sat back, deep in thought.
What was happening to him… All of it seemed magical. Reminding himself how he felt when he had been with her, it had seemed to him like true love back then. But now it was just a mere shadow compared to what he had with Raina. Raina’s mellifluous voice was music to his ears. Her body was gorgeous, her soul even more gorgeous. She was so kind, naïve at times, but extremely smart. She… She was so gentle and so… He struggled to find the words. So… Innocent. That was it. She believed that everyone meant her well. That people’s hearts were precisely like hers. He loved that. He loved every single inch of her and he smiled at that. Dean Franklin seldom smiled in private, but here he was doing just that. She did amazing things to him and he couldn’t recognize himself. He guessed that true love and his soul mate did exactly that.
Dean stood up to go for the bathroom to have a shower to warm himself up a bit. America knew to be severe during winter time. But his cell phone’s tune stopped him in his tracks. He peeked at the screen only to read Raymond – Father.
It took him a second to understand that his father was calling. His father with whom he wasn’t speaking. Why? For the simple fact that his father was the greediest person alive that Dean knew. That dad of his had told him that breaking up with Sally had been a mistake. It had been a smart business match in his words, for her family had been influential and his father had thought to bring the family capital together. What a terrible father! Raymond had been upset because he had lost Sally’s money and hadn’t even given a damn about his son’s feelings after the break-up.
Dean picked up, already frustrated. “What is it?”
“Aren’t you going to wish your father merry Christmas, son? Or we are well past that?”
“Just get to the point, please.” Dean’s voice was tough and filled with hatred. He hoped that his father had understood the position they placed themselves in.
“Okay, I will be short and concise. Break up with Raina Barnes.” Raymond’s tone was ice cold.
Dean was taken aback. How did he know about them? Was it possible that he had hired someone to follow him? Or was it the media?
“What?” Dean shouted in the phone.
“Just put an end to what you think you have with Raina. She is not for you, son. She is family. It is a scandal, the thing you two are into. You will destroy everything. You will throw yours and our future under the bus! Wake up, you idiot!” Dean’s father was yelling in his cell as well.
“You know what? Don’t mess in my life anymore. I have had enough of you and your games. This… Everything you have done and everything you do is not something a father does to his son. Live your life and leave me alone!”
“Oh, you are not getting away with that. That girl is not for you. Did you end the things with Sally to fall so low?” Raymond gave his son a low chuckle.
“How can you? What kind of a man are you? I love her and you have no say in that. There is nothing you can do that will stop us from loving each other.” Dean was firm, his insides boiling. He balled his hands into fists and counted to ten silently.
His father was wickedly laughing on the phone. “Leave her… Leave her or I will make her leave myself! Never underestimate my power!”
“Shut up and disappear from my life, okay? Listen to me, I don’t want to hear anything from you or see you! The only thing I ask of you is to leave me and Raina alone. And make no mistake, if you have a long hand, my hand is longer and it has sharper claws. Your threats don’t scare me anymore. Those times are gone now! If you think you have some kind of power, stay away so that you don’t witness mine.” Dean hung up, his face burning. He held his cell phone clutched tightly in his hand not willing to let the words he had just heard escape. Somehow, it seemed that as long as he kept them trapped between his fingers they wouldn’t become real. But, oh, they were real. Real and terrible to bear.
Leave her, his father had said. Leave her or I’ll make her leave myself!
How dared he interfere in Dean’s life? Dean wasn’t a small child he could control and yell at anymore. Raina was his loved one. A woman like no other he had ever met. And his father wanted him to separate from her. Damn me if I let him do that, he thought to himself angrily throwing the cell on the bed.
Walking to the window of the hotel room on the tenth floor, he completely abandoned the thoughts of showering himself. He was like a time bomb, ready to explode any minute. Nothing mattered at that moment. All he saw before his eyes was Raina’s content face and her lips saying ‘I love you’. Her wide, calming smile that rippled his soul. Her beautiful eyes that captured him and didn’t release him. Neither his father nor anyone else could take that away from him.
As people were passing down on the busy sidewalks dirtied with snow and mud, he couldn’t help it but follow their movements with his eyes. They were so peaceful, content and in the same time focused. Milling about their own business it seemed as if they had all their steps planned beforehand. He sighed wishing his life had that order and brought his cell phone before his face. It didn’t take him long to find Raina’s number as it was in the recently called list and he tapped her name.
A ring. Two. Three
“Dean?” She sounded excited, loving.
“How is my Raina?” He spoke with his deep voice in the cell, wanting her to be here with him on the bed.

“We were just together. How will I be? Perfect. And how is my boyfriend? Is he thinking about me?”
“Oh, let me see…”
“Dean! How dare you?” She giggled.
“He loves you, truly, unconditionally, always and forever,” he finally said, scratching his cheek with the free hand.
Raina’s laughter from the other side was enough to get him through the rest of the day.
