“Okay, Nicole,” Doctor Ali said in her sweet voice. “It’s time to start pushing.”
The dancer was brought to reality by her doctor’s words. She’d started thinking of other things as a way of distracting herself from the horrible pain she was experiencing right now. She hadn’t even started pushing the babies out yet, but the sensation was already bordering unbearable. Nicole wasn’t entirely sure if she’d be able to do this. She pushed as hard as she could, screaming rather loudly as she did so. Evan was standing next to the bed, holding her hand and uttering words of encouragement and love in her ear. The dancer didn’t want to hear him saying how much he loved her; if he truly loved her, he wouldn’t have gotten her pregnant and made her go through this godawful feeling of being ripped apart as she tried to bring their children to life. Obviously, she didn’t mean that. But the pain spoke louder than her love, and right now she hated Evan. Nicole made sure to squeeze his hand as hard as possible to make him feel at least a tiny bit of the pain she was feeling.
“One last push, Nicole!” The doctor exclaimed. Nicole pushed, feeling drained and breathless. She was almost dozing off when she heard the sweet cry of a baby. Her baby. Through glazed eyes, she could see the silhouette of her child being taken over to get cleaned and then the nurse hands it over to Nicole. It was her baby girl. She was born before her brother, and it gave Nicole a bit of pride to know that the little girl would be the big sister. Nicole had never felt this amount of love before, she didn’t know it was possible. She was crying desperately as she held her daughter in her arms. Her perfect daughter…

“Desiree…” Nicole whispered. It was her grandmother’s name. The only person in her family who’d always supported Nicole no matter what. It broke the dancer’s heart to know that her sweet grandma wouldn’t get to see Nicole’s family as she’d died of lung cancer a couple of years prior to Nicole’s big move to the city.
When the contraction pains sent shock waves through her body, Nicole felt Evan taking Desiree out of her arms and holding the baby close to his chest as he cried as much as Nicole was crying. Her heart skipped a beat seeing the love in Evan’s eyes. The dancer heard the faint sounds of the doctor encouraging her to keep pushing. She wished she had the strength to tell Doctor Ali to fu*k off. Demanding that she push the baby out as if it were an easy task. Finally, the pain subsided, her heartbeat slowed down, and she heard a quieter cry. It was her son, and she cried even harder when she held him in her arms. She searched Evan’s tear-filled eyes and smiled what she considered the happiest and most genuine smile in her entire life.
“Evan…” She said. “This is our son, our Devon.”
The blond man let out a loud sob as he gently placed Desiree in her mother’s arms, and grabbed Devon. He held the precious baby tightly against his chest and cried as he took in the scent of his newborn son. His heart was about to burst in happiness and love. It was overwhelming. Here he was, standing right next to the love of his life, who was holding their daughter in her arms, while holding his son. His son whose name was the same of his own father. Evan couldn’t stop the tears even if he tried. A nurse grabbed his camera and the happy family posed for a picture, the first picture of their perfect family. Evan was now more than sure he would do anything to protect his family and love them forever.
He and Nicole would give Desiree and Devon all the love they didn’t have the opportunity to receive.
