Somehow, though, they kissed and touched and danced their way across the living room, through the door and up the stairs, until they stood in the upstairs hallway, surrounded by bedrooms. Surrounded by choices.
Only then did Brian pull back, as if he wanted to give her time to make whatever choice she was going to make. His hesitation surprised her. Usually, he was a man who, when he wanted something, did whatever he had to do to get it. No cajoling, no seducing, no petitioning, only full-on frontal attack, damn the torpedoes or anything that got in his way. She wouldn’t have been surprised if he had swept her up at the bottom of the stairs the way Rhett had Scarlett and carried her to his room to ravish her. Especially since she’d made it clear how very much she wanted to be ravished.
Evidently, though, Brian pursued his personal affairs with more finesse than he did his professional ones. And for some reason, realizing that just made Nina that much more certain that allowing this next step between them, however suddenly it had come — though, somehow, it didn’t feel that sudden at all — was the right thing to do.

It was then that Nina’s confidence about what she had allowed to happen between them began to slip. Because she realized then that what she had thought was a crush on a sexy man was so much more. And although Brian had certainly mellowed during his time with her, to the point where he no longer seemed consumed by his work, he’d offered no indication that he considered anything else more important. Maybe he wasn’t anymore. Maybe. But could he — would he — ever join himself to something, someone, else?
