Chapter 3

Lara

It was on a Sunday morning and Lara had truly outdone herself. She had made everything she could think of making for breakfast.

Pancakes.

Crispy bacon.

Italian sausage and ricotta frittata.

It was like she could not really figure out what she really wanted to have for breakfast but the truth was that she was a little too spoiled for choice.

She had just laid out the table when Myka who was still in her pajamas walked into the kitchen. She raised an eyebrow when she saw the table.

“Are we having guests for breakfast or something?” she asked and Lara shook her head. “Did we have plans and I forgot about them?”

Lara laughed and shook her head again.

“I just wanted to comfort eat and I have the morning off so I thought I would binge on all my favorite breakfast items,” she said.

“You usually only do this when you are stressed about something. So what is it?” Myka asked as she sat down. Lara poured two glasses of juice and handed one to her sister.

“You sit down and eat your breakfast missy. If anyone is going to be asking any questions about anything, it’s going to be me,” Lara said as she sat down.

“Well, that isn’t going to be a problem or anything…but which breakfast am I going to go for exactly?” Myka asked.

“Well, you could have one of each…I am not really hell bent on a particular one,” Lara said as she took a serving of the frittata.

“I don’t mind spoiling myself every so often,” Myka started as she put a pancake and side of crispy bacon on her plate. “But does any of this have to do with your friend who just happens to be a producer blowing up my phone?”

Lara looked at her, an eyebrow over the other.

“Felipe has been calling you?” she asked and Myka shrugged.

“More like texting me really.”

“Felipe is texting you,” Lara confirmed and her sister nodded. “What about? Is he getting smart with you or something?”

Myka reached for the maple syrup.

“Not in the very least. Apparently you have been dodging his calls about some audition or something.”

“Why doesn’t he talk to me directly about that? Why does he have to go through you?” Lara asked before she took a bite of her frittata.

“Well, apparently you are not texting him back or even calling him back. And he said that this could potentially be a big gig,” Myka went on saying. She looked at her and took a long sip of her juice before she put the glass down. “So I guess the big question here is why in the hell are you blowing off a potentially good audition?”

Lara shook her head and took another bite of her frittata.

“I am the grown up here. I should be the one asking all these questions about your school and stuff,” she said. She looked up when she took another bite of her food. “So, what’s going on in school?”

“Really? Lara? We are going to be talking about me and school while it is so obvious that you are the one who needs to talk about…God knows what’s on your mind?” Myka asked and Lara sighed loudly.

“Myka…” she started but her sister was not done giving her an earful.

“Are you giving up on your dream, Lara?” Myka asked. “Because just because you’ve had a few bad auditions does not mean that you should just give up on the one thing you love more than life itself.”

“And you know about my bad auditions how exactly?”

Myka smiled

“You know all about my school activities and you think I wouldn’t want to know all about your life? Your jobs?” she asked.

Lara laughed.

“I am the grown up here. I am the one who gets to ask about your life.”

“Well, it is obvious that you are keeping off the inevitable. This could be your big break and you are just going to let it go. And without even trying no less.”

Lara laughed.

“First of all, why the hell are you keeping tabs on me? I told you I am the adult.”

“Well, if Felipe is calling and texting me, then I am sure this might very well be a great thing. The great thing…maybe the greatest.”

Lara shook her head and put her fork down.

“If I promise to get in touch with Felipe, are you going to drop this?” she asked and Myka nodded.

“That’s a definite promise,” she said in a soft voice.

“Fine. I’ll call him,” Lara said in a soft tired voice.

“Today?”

Lara rolled her eyes.

“I cannot catch a break with you today, can I?” she asked and Myka shook her head.

“I am only getting off your case if and when you tell me that you are going to get back to him today.”

Lara looked at her sister and once more raised an eyebrow. She bit her lower lip and sighed.

“Why do I have a feeling that you know more about this audition than you are supposed to?” she asked and Myka shrugged.

“Maybe because I do.”

“Did you guys actually talk about me?” Lara asked and Myka shook her head.

“Actually, we were discussing the audition and considering the person who is handling it, you cannot blow this off.”

Lara forced out a silent laugh. How did her sixteen year old sister know just who was conducting the audition and she didn’t? Was there a slight chance that she might have been right? Was she actually so uninterested in her life that she was no longer paying attention to the little details that used to matter?

“You know who is handling the audition,” she echoed and Myka nodded.

“This French director known for his wildly romantic movies. Guillaume Laurent.”

Lara took another bite of her frittata and began to trace the edge of her plate with her fork. She’d heard of Guillaume Laurent. But he was a notch above the rest as far as she was concerned. Maybe all those auditions that she had been to and failed were actually beginning to get to her head because she did not think that she was worth being in a Guillaume Laurent audition.
