Chapter 1
Lara
It was finally half past one in the morning and Lara was exhausted. The Broken Arrow was always packed to capacity but on this particular Wednesday night, she had been a little more hectic than usual and she had never felt better making the last call than she did on that day.
Being a beautiful African American woman who could perfectly pull of a mash up of Beyoncé Knowles Kelly Rowland look, everyone had always thought that she had the perfect life but what they did not really know was that between working shifts at The Broken Arrow and being a restaurant hostess, she was really struggling trying to find the perfect balance between her job, her dream of being an actress and being the guardian of her sixteen year old half-sister Myka. As far as she was concerned, she was always working because when it was not one thing it was the other. She could not wait for the day it was all over. The day when her career took priority. The day when she met a man who was worth her while. That was really what she had always wanted underneath it all.
She sighed when she saw the clock strike 2:00 am. It was officially time to close down. She gestured at Richard, the head security guy to take care of the last few people in the bar as she cleaned up. It seemed to be forever before she could finally sigh in relief when she was done. She wanted to get home and prepare breakfast for Myka and hopefully get some shut eye before she woke up. And the best way to do that was to get out of the bar immediately once she was done so that she could make sure she was back at her place to have a good three hours before her sister woke up to get ready for school.
“Okay. I’m done for the night and I’m out,” Lara said as she folded her apron. “Anyone need me, feel free not to call me,” she added as she began walking towards the door.
“Hey, quick feet,” Lara heard her supervisor Ashley call out to her.
She sighed loudly as she held on to the strap of her sling bag. She had been working the late shift for the last few days and it was really messing with her head as far as leaving her half-sister alone at home was concerned. And even though she would have rather had the early night shift, the late shift did pay better. And just then, she realized why Ashley was calling out to her. The tips.
“Forgot my tips again, huh?” Lara asked as she turned around.
“Bingo!” Ashley said smiling as Lara began walking towards her. “You know that Myka is fine, right? She is not a kid anymore, you know?”
Lara rolled her eyes.
“I would rather have a kid any day than have a teenager,” she said. “Lucky you. All you need is a babysitter and you’re good.”
Ashley laughed as she handed Lara an envelope.
“We could trade…I mean, any freaking day. I would definitely be up for it.”
Lara shook her head as she looked inside the envelope.
“Great night tonight, huh?” she said and Ashley nodded.
“Three hundred bucks. You are a favorite with our regulars, Lara. You have always known that.”
Lara stuffed the envelope into her bag and was about to walk out when Ashley grabbed her wrist
“Hey, missy. Sit,” Ashley said in an authoritative tone.
“Ash, seriously…” Lara started but Ashley wasn’t hearing any of it.
“You did install those cameras in your apartment, didn’t you?” Ashley asked as she poured two glasses of chardonnay.
“Yes.”
“Well, you can check on her at any time. And I know that you checked in on her half an hour ago.” She pushed a glass towards her and smiled. “I see everything in here lady.”
“Sure. Big Brother’s always watching at The Broken Arrow,” Lara said as she took a sip of her chardonnay. “And by the way, this,” she gestured at the bottle of wine on the counter. “Is coming right out of your pocket.”
Ashley smiled and pulled a twenty dollar bill out of her purse.
“There. Now stop fussing and talk to me,” she said in a soft voice. “It’s been a while since we talked.”
“We’ve been talking all throughout the day.”
“Actually, I’m talking about a real talk. Friend to friend.” Ashley sipped on her wine and looked at Lara. “You haven’t talked about your acting career in a long time and I am kind of worried that you are giving up on it.”
Lara shook her head as she took a sip of her own wine.
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” she said as she held the base of her glass. “I’ve just taken a break from all the auditions because if it is not another low budget film that will probably never boost my career, it is the same annoying roles over and over.” She shrugged. “It’s freaking frustrating.”
“Same housekeeper roles over and over?” Ashley asked and Lara forced out a laugh.
“Housekeeper? If only I would be so lucky. All the maid roles are usually Latin American owned…which is a really terrible stereotype. African Americans usually get the black best friend or a vivacious low level employee…liquor store or something.” She took another sip of her wine. “And by the way, the film producers and directors only do that because they want to be politically correct. So throw in one Latin American and a black person in an all-white cast to show your quote unquote support for minorities. Freaking terrible!”
Ashley smiled.
“See, you did need to talk about it.”
Lara nodded and crossed one leg over the other.
“I guess I did, huh?”
She forced out a laugh and took another sip of her wine.
“What about you? What’s going on with everything?” she asked.
She had known Ashley for a long time and she knew that she would not just suggest a talk if she did not have something to get off her chest herself. She raised an eyebrow when she noticed how silent Ashley had suddenly become.

“I knew it,” she said under her breath. She couldn’t help but smile.
“Knew what?” Ashley asked.
“There is something up with you. Maybe at home or something because you usually never want to talk at…” Lara looked at her wrist watch. “Two thirty in the morning. Unless of course something is up.”
Ashley shook her head.
“You know I’m right,” Lara said before she took a sip of her wine. “What’s going on with the baby?”
