Chapter 6

Destiny stared out of the window of the private plane that she was in to see the cloud blanket that was covering the sky right outside. It was amazing that she was up in the air like this, and it felt quite good to be a passenger for a change and being served instead of having to be the one doing the serving.

She looked at Jourdan who smiled at her from his seat across from her.

“You seem to really like looking at the clouds,” he said.

“I do,” said Destiny. “I think they seem so beautiful, I can never get enough of them. Four years I have been a flight attendant and I honestly have never even come close to getting tired of the view, it is the best part of the job in my opinion.”

“It is pretty amazing that human beings are able to get so high up in the air, is not it?” asked Jourdan.

“It most certainly is,” said Destiny. “We have this amazing ability to innovate, I mean just two hundred years ago it would have seemed absolutely impossibly to people that we would one day be soaring up above the clouds!”

“Indeed,” said Jourdan. “You tend to see things for what they are. It is a rare gift. Are you hungry?”

“Not at all,” said Destiny. “In fact I think I won’t be eating anything else today. That was a very heavy lunch that you gave me today!”

“Only the best for you,” said Jourdan. “I just want to make sure that you are well fed. You are eating for two now, remember that!”

Destiny laughed and then looked outside again. The clouds were getting thinner, she could see the landscape below. It was a gorgeous landscape, greener than anything she had seen before. She could almost taste the fresh air outside, completely free of all of the pollution that the cities were so full of. She felt happy just being here, even though she wasn’t even there yet. She had a feeling that she was really going to enjoy staying with Jourdan. He was going to spoil her and give her absolutely everything that she wanted. This was more than she could ask for given the circumstances.”

“So,” said Jourdan. “I would like to have my doctor look over you. He is the best in the country, a true genius, and he is going to make sure that you are perfectly healthy. I just want to make sure that you are healthy and safe, and that our baby is healthy and safe as well.”

“Don’t you worry about that,” said Destiny. “I am pretty sure that our baby is perfectly safe. I do think that I am going to need a checkup, though, just in case.”

“Of course,” said Jourdan. “You will get a check up every month, or even twice a month if the doctor thinks that it is necessary. I am also going to have the doctor draw up a diet plan for you. You need to eat healthy so that the baby ends up being healthy.”

“I do not know about that,” said Destiny. “I do not think I would enjoy following a diet very much.”

“Alright,” said Jourdan, “Of course, I am not going to force you to follow a diet if that is not what you want. Besides, we can probably just get you healthy by giving you some multivitamins. I just want to make sure that you are completely okay, I just want you to know that I am not going to force you to do anything that you do not want to do. If you do not want to go on a diet, you won’t have to. You are free to do absolutely anything you want, and if you wake up in the morning and decide you want to leave you are free to do so. And if you want to come back after leaving, you will be free to do that as well, alright?”

“Alright,” said Destiny. “Thank you so much for this.”

“Do not thank me,” said Jourdan, “this is nothing to thank me for.”

“Of course it is,” said Destiny. “You are putting so much effort into making me feel at home, I really do appreciate it.”

The plane started to descend, and Destiny felt a little queasy. She never got airsick at all, she was not the type of person that felt that way, but for some reason being in the passenger seat of a smaller plane made her feel that way. She then realized that it might just be the fact that she had a baby in her belly.

She sighed and closed her eyes, and then felt pressure on her hand. She looked up to see that it was Jourdan, squeezing her hand and reassuring her. She smiled at him, grateful for his presence. He really was a very good man, the sort of man that she would want to spend the rest of her life with.

She wondered why she was not willing to be with him. He was everything that she had ever wanted after all. He was rich too, which was not something that she had actively looked for but it was something that she appreciated nonetheless. He was a kind, gentle and generous man and she knew that he would make a great father to her child.

And yet… there was a nagging doubt that stopped her from taking the plunge, so to speak. This doubt was that this man, no matter how good he was, might not be all that great for her. She was not sure if she would be able to live with him for a long period of time. After all, love fades more often than not, and all that you are left with is the bitter aftertaste that comes with that.

She was afraid of hurting him, as well. She was scared that she would get bored or that she would not be able to love him after a certain period of time had passed. And when that happened, what she was truly afraid of was Jourdan being heartbroken.

She thought of the other option, which was that she would go and live in New York and Jourdan would live in the same city. She wondered if this might end up being the better option in the long run. After all, it meant that they would both be there for their child and they would not be married to each other. They would support each other of course, but that commitment Destiny feared to such a great extent would not be there. She would be safe, insulated from the threat of no longer loving someone.

But then again, this would not be fair to their child. Or would it? She thought about for it a long time. If she tried to be with Jourdan and broke his heart, it would end up making him resent her. This was not just possible, it was probable. And if he started to resent her, that would mean that he would not be able to be there for their child as much as he would have been otherwise. He would start to fight with her and she with him, and this would eventually turn into them hating each other. This would be a terrible thing for their child to go through, it would be something that would surely affect it a great deal. She did not know if she would be able to handle it if this happened. Their child would be scarred for life, there was no doubt about it. She would be forced to raise the child alone because Jourdan would resent her so much that he would not be able to take care of the child.
