Finn was laughing with a few of the people gathered around the island, so Aja saddled up beside Killian, watching the eggs crackle and jump in the cast iron pan.
“I did it,” she whispered.
“Did you?” Killian asked, keeping his voice low.
Aja nodded and looked over her shoulder. “Did anyone say anything?”
“No. Why do you ask?”
“Allison is looking at me like she might kill me,” she murmured
Killian rolled his eyes and waved one large hand. “Don’t worry about her. She’s harmless.”
Aja did not necessarily share that sentiment but she nudged the large man.
“Thank you. You told me what I needed to hear.”
A small smile pulled at his full lips and he turned to bump his knuckles into her shoulder.
“Any time. Finn is a very dear friend of mine and I just want to see him happy.”
Aja glanced back at Finn and her heart fluttered as she watched him laugh. He never held back when he laughed. It was just so… Free. Aja wanted to be the person who made Finn happy.
“I meant it last night,” Aja continued, holding one of the slick wooden plates that had been stacked up beside the mock wood burning stove.
“Meant what?” He asked, plating the food.
“I’m going to hook you up with my friend. Her name is Jaleeyah and she’s way prettier than me.”
“That’s a tall order to fill, but I’m going to take your word for it,” he said with a chuckle.
Aja’s cheeks burned bright red. She’d never really considered herself particularly beautiful. She had a broad nose that matched her wide, full lips. Her high cheekbones and honey gold eyes were alright, but she was particularly proud of her long, straight hair. She took care of it as best she could and over the years it had grown to the point of nearly touching her lower back. and it was her hair too. She’d spent years getting extensions put in until she finally had grown it out. Now every inch of it was hers.
“Take that plate to the island?”
Aja nodded and paused before turning away from the kitchen and offering the plate to Allison. The blonde eyed the plate for a while before sighing and rolling her eyes.
“You’re going to mess up my hook up and be nice to me?”
Aja almost apologized but then she set her lips in a thin line.
“I don’t want to be your enemy, Allison. You and Finn obviously run in the same circles so I would like it if we could be decent to one another, but I’m not going to bend over backwards to get you to like me. I have feelings for Finn, and if that ever isn’t the case anymore then I won’t stand in the way of you two doing whatever you want to do. I don’t like making enemies of other women, especially not over a guy. So, I’m going to ask you once if we can bury the hatchet and at least be friendly with one another.”

Allison had set the plate down on the coffee table and let out a little huff.
“God! And you tell the truth like it is,” after a moment, a small smile pulled at her pink lips. “I’m a little sore at you, but I’ll get over it. Hopefully tonight,” she said, her eyes wandering to a tall, dark-skinned man with a wide smile and kind eyes.
Ah. Allison was just horny. Aja smiled and followed her gaze.
“Shoot your shot, girl. He’d be lucky to have you. Even for a night.”
Allison just smirked, her gaze not leaving the gorgeous man. Aja left her to her lusting and went back to Killian, helping him dole out the rest of the food. Everyone dug in and any tension that was left in the air quickly dispersed, leaving only laughter and good food behind.
