Chapter 9 – Almost Done
As soon as she hung up the phone, she knew she had made a mistake. Kaja fought tears as she stared at the length of the call still displayed on the screen. “Less than a minute,” she whispered. “Less than a minute to break his heart.”
“What?” Rashan asked, wondering if he’d heard right. He couldn’t understand why Eric meant so much to Kaja when it was obvious that she wanted to be with him.
Kaja got up from the floor and started collecting her things. “Nothing. I think it’s time for me to go. Look, I told him not to contact me anymore, so you don’t have to worry about him now, alright?”

The music in the Range Rover was entirely too loud for eight o’clock in the morning, though Kaja held her peace because Rashan was in a good mood. He turned the volume up even louder and yelled along with the rapper on the radio. What happened to the old school slow jams? Kaja wondered.
“Baby, when I get my money right, that’s gonna be us living like millionaires. Big house, nice cars—I’m talking ownership cause a lease gets expensive. My mom pays an arm and a leg to lease this Range. “
So, the truck wasn’t even his? Kaja tried not to roll her eyes. When his hand dropped from the steering wheel onto her leg, she eased her thigh away from his touch. The more she listened to him, the more she lingered around him, the more she felt like she was in the wrong place. Her thoughts raced to Eric. What had she done? He would likely never forgive her.
She wanted to tell Rashan that he was a big dreamer, trying to live outside his means. How were they supposed to live like millionaires on a teacher’s salary? Especially if he didn’t even want her to work! He had lofty ideas about the future, but she wasn’t sure he would ever attain them. The man seemed like a planner, but he had taken her into a store that was out of his budget and tried to buy her a gift that he couldn’t afford. He wasn’t a visionary; he was shortsighted.
