Gabe flashed him a dangerous look. “Of course. What other purpose do you think you serve? What I can’t bother to do, I ask of you,” he said. The man remained silent, fuming all the while because he had thought their actions were not as blase as that.

“Why would you do this Gabe? We parted on good terms.”

“Good?” he asked, walking over to Darien. “You call walking away after I had given you immortality good? I was there with you for a thousand years, teaching you everything you know, and then you decided that it wasn’t enough. You wanted more and because I couldn’t give it, you abandoned me. For years I wandered around trying to survive on my own again, but I had grown accustomed to the company. I slaughtered and killed many I didn’t need to in your name, vowing that when I next laid eyes on you, I would destroy you.”

“You already destroyed me when you turned me. It became your duty to teach me the ways and you taught me to kill and maim senselessly. I had grown tired of it and I wanted a new life. That was something you were supposed to understand. Now here you are, trying your damnedest to get back at me still. To make matters worse, that was two thousand years ago. You really need to let this go.”

“I will let it go when you lose your life like I lost mine. I will give up when I can smile at your demise. Give me that if you want me to get over it,” he growled.

“I am going to get my life back. I got away from you before and I am going to get away from you again.” With that, Darien leapt into the air and caught Gabe half way in a pounce as well. Darien reached out and scratched at him, producing a crescent shaped blood mark on his face. He fell to the ground and touched the spot. Gabe exploded when he realized Darien had cut him.

“Gabe, we don’t have to do this. You can just go and find another town.”

“I am not going anywhere. It was my original intention to simply pass through town, take a few kills and then leave. But that night in the alley when you came upon me with that girl, I could hardly believe my good fortune at running into you. For years I searched for you, and you expect me to leave without at least taking a bite of revenge? I don’t think so.”

He launched another attack on Darien, this time pinning him to the ground. He extended his nails and jabbed at him, but Darien blocked his blow and flipped him over so that he now rested on top. He was faster than Gabe so before he could react, he had another blood stain on the other cheek. The taller guy who was standing a ways off came charging in to assist Gabe, despite his lack of respect for him.

“Back off Luther. I can handle this one,” he commanded.

Luther assumed his former position and simply watched as Darien tore into Gabe repeatedly. Darien had a few scratches on his hand, but nothing major. His cells would regenerate, but so would Gabe’s. He had to inflict lasting wounds on him. Darien flew to his feet and grabbed Gabe by the collar, spinning him around into a jaw breaking punch. He wheeled back and fell to the ground, sweeping Darien’s feet from under him, causing him to tumble. He jumped on him and held his throat with both hands. Darien thrashed around for a while until he found a piece of stick on the ground that he used to jab Gabe in the side. Gabe buckled, giving Darien room to leap out from under him. He brought the wood cracking down across his back, keeping him on the ground a while longer. “Gabe, we don’t have to do this,” said Darien in one last plea.

“Never,” retorted Gabe, rising from the ground still. Darien leapt in the air and landed behind Gabe. By the time he could turn, Darien already had him in a choke hold, a blade at his throat. Gabe panicked now and stretched his hands out now to Luther. “Help,” he begged.

“I think you can handle this, master,” he said, his eyes bleeding venom.

The last thing Gabe saw before Darien drew the blade across his throat was the sneer on Luther’s face. Darien let his body slip from his hands and then stepped over him. He walked over to the babbling two who were left completely defenseless now that their master and conscience was dead. “Where do you keep the rest of the badges you stole?”

They moved immediately to the place they were all hidden and gave them to Darien. Darien then grabbed him by the ear and raced with him through the bushes. He needed proof to get his life back. While he may not have them execute him, he could take him to Weston and tape a confession from him. Then, they could send that to the agency and it would all all over.

Weston was fast asleep when Darien got there, dragging Luther behind him. “What is the meaning of this Darien?” he asked.

“This is the vampire that has been stealing the badges and killing the girls, under the command of a long time associate of mine. He is now dead.”

“My word. It didn’t take you very long at all,” he said. “Here, have a seat. So what do you suggest we do?” he asked.

“I don’t necessarily need for them to execute them. They were only following orders as new converts and as I did when he had just turned me. Maybe we can have him confess to everything  on tape.”

“They?” asked Weston.

“There is another who might or might not be lingering around still waiting for him,” he said.

“Okay. Well, let me get the tape recorder and we will see if this works.”
