Once he realized it was clear, he motioned for Janelle and Curtis to follow him. They closed the door quickly before running off in the opposite direction. Janelle was happy that her hair dried fairly quickly, though it looked a bit nappy from all the chlorine and sweat. Curtis and Vance’s hair seemed to be drying nicely as well. There was nothing too out of order with any of their bodies, thankfully.
They skirted past groups of teenagers and parents taking strolls through the maze and ducked into the back exit.
“I’ll see you at work tomorrow,” Vance said, leaning down and kissing Janelle on the cheek. He walked over to Curtis and shook his hand before giving him a hug. They watched as he hopped into
his car and sped off into the night.
“And what about you, miss Janelle?” Curtis asked, tugging on her dress.
“It’s pretty late,” she said. “Can we keep hanging out another time?”

“Absolutely,” Curtis said with a smile. She always loved that Curtis was so understanding about things like this.
He was definitely different than Vance, in every way shape and form from looks to emotions. Thankfully the two seemed to get along just fine, either because they were both into Janelle or they had some sort of strange latent respect for one another. Whatever the reason was, she was happy that things seemed to be working out between the three of them. This way she wouldn’t have to worry about anything bad happening, like Vance creeping back to Monique.
Janelle surveyed the parking lot one last time, just to make sure Monique hadn’t been following them. She knew it was crazy, but it always felt like Monique showed up at the worst possible times either because she was following Janelle on purpose or by accident. She was like a dark cloud looming over Janelle’s happiness. Thankfully, things seemed to be taking a turn for the better.
Curtis drove Janelle home in silence. He was tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and humming along to the music. It was a nice drive, the streets covered in puddles of golden light that reminded Janelle of the lights in the pool.
She knew she hadn’t made up that memory of the Aphrodite statue though she had no idea what exactly the memory entailed. Either way, she was happy to have seen something that made her close to her again. It seemed the only things she had left other than the statue were her father and her golden cross necklace.
