“Get my bags in the car,” she said without turning around to look at him.

“Michelle, will you please just wait?” David pleaded and she turned around to look at him.

“What am I waiting for? Haven’t I been waiting long enough? For you to come to your senses? Because that’s exactly what I’ve been doing but nothing has happened yet and honestly I don’t think it is going to happen.”

David looked at her glassy eyes and felt the guilt raking through him. He was the cause of her pain. He was the one to blame for all that negativity. At that moment, he might have as well been Jean-Phillippe Lavoisier. The pain in her eyes… it was evident. She was in misery and he was the cause. She was done being patient with him. She was done being Mrs. Favre. She was done being his woman… she was just done. At that moment, Bernard’s voice was loud in his head. He had to do something or this was the moment he was going to lose the best thing that had ever happened to him. He reached for her hand again and she bit her lower lip.

“Let me go,” she said in a whisper as she once again pulled her hand from his own.

She looked down at her hand and pulled off her wedding band and engagement ring.

“You should have these back. They belong to your family… especially the engagement ring,” she said.

Her words cut him deeper than any blade ever could. He took the rings from her and slid them back on her ring finger.

“David, please….” She begged but he wouldn’t let her go. He sunk to his knees and sobbed as he held her. He didn’t know if it was this action or the fact that he was finally letting her see his sensitive side that finally made her just stand there, her hand on his head. She stroked his hair and got down on the floor next to him. She looked into his eyes and wiped off his tears. “Why have you been holding all this in?” she whispered and he shook his head.

“I don’t know. I guess I just thought that I was strong enough.”

Michelle shook her head and ran her fingers through his hair.

“No one is ever strong enough to lose someone they love.”

He got up and then helped her up. He lifted her left hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles softly.

“Don’t ever take these off again,” he said as he looked into her eyes.

Michelle bit her lower lip again.

“They’re just rings… “

David shook his head.

“No, they’re symbols of my love.”

Michelle looked into his eyes.

“What?” She could not find her voice. All she could do was whisper.

“I’m in love with you, Michelle. You hold a part of my heart I didn’t even know existed.”

Michelle took a long, deep breath.

“But you….” She shook her head. “I was giving up on you, David.”

David held her chin gently.

“Please don’t ever give up on me. Don’t give up on us,” he said in a soft voice as he took her car keys from her and put them in his own pocket. “The life that I’ve built for us, this house… I couldn’t bear it without you. I cannot live without you, Michelle.”

He held the back of her neck and almost instinctively Michelle leaned in and kissed him.
