The night seemed to fly by, because by the time David was thinking of checking his watch, it was past midnight. The short drive home was intense. They’d both had some drinks and for the first time ever, they’d been a little physical in a bid to sell the marriage to the public. The physical contact was the determining factor when it came to just how intense the ride was. David wanted to feel the arch of her back again or the nape of her neck in his palm and she wanted to push his hair back from his face. Stroke his chin as she looked into his eyes.
She didn’t know, none of them knew, that they were thinking of all the things they would have wanted to do each other and perhaps that was the biggest reason they were so awkward around each other.
The car came to a stop when they got home and David looked at her before the driver opened the door for them.
“Thanks, Maxwell,” David said when the driver opened the door for him. He got out of the car and walked around the front to open the door for Michelle. He held his hand out and waited for Michelle to place her well-manicured hand in it before she climbed out of the car.
“Come on, let’s get you out of this cold,” he said as he slipped an arm around her shoulders and walked her into the house.
“Do you want something before we go to bed?” he asked as he led her to the kitchen. “One last drink? Some water maybe?”
She shook her head and placed her purse on the counter.
“No, I’m fine. Thank you.” She pushed a lock of hair behind her ear. “I’m already a little tipsy and I’d like to be able to carry a decent conversation, but a water would be great.”
David got two bottles of water from the fridge and handed her one. He looked at her as she took a sip of her water.
“So, what is it that you were talking about with that Congressman?” she asked.
“Oh, the legislation?”
She nodded.
“There’s a planned expansion of the business into a new area, but it all depends on how the Congressional debates turn out.”
Michelle raised an eyebrow.
“You’re going to pay your way to new laws just to benefit your business?” she wondered out loud and he nodded.
“Well, if you put it like that, it sounds like I’m committing some kind of crime. Let’s call them donations.”
She nodded.
“Donations,” she echoed.
“Yes, and don’t worry, it’s not one of those quote unquote situations. It’s usually a donation to a charity and I have someone who sees to it that the money remains in the charity. The full amount, not just a percentage of it. So, someone gets to look good and I get what I want,” he explained.
She took a long sip of her water.
“You really believe that your money can get you anything, huh?” she asked, a smile forming on the corners of her mouth.
“Please, what do I always say?” he asked as he looked at her.
“That you can buy everything.”
He nodded.
“Everything’s for sale, Michelle. You just have to offer the right price.”
Michelle rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, yeah and I always tell you that some things cannot be bought.”
The tone in her voice, David knew it. He’d heard it before from other girls. Not once or twice either. That was how he knew that Michelle had something up her sleeve. But at the same time, he was nervous. He was unsure about everything, even though he could cut the s*xual tension between them with a knife. It wasn’t that he’d never looked at Michelle in a s*xual way, he had. After all, everyone had, it was impossible not to. Michelle was like the perfect life size cutout of what most women looked for when they thought of perfection. The envy of many…. Her body was perfect and her full mane that was almost always straightened fell like a black, silky waterfall over her shoulders. The dress she had on brought out every perfect feature of her body. He’d been fighting against himself not to simply take her into his arms all night. And now, here they were standing in their kitchen and all he could think about was simply ripping that dress off her perfect body. Taking her into his arms and claiming every inch of that perfect chocolate skin. He could feel the discomfort in his pants as his co*k hardened. It was getting hard just focusing on his breathing. The look between them had intensified as his breathing had. He could tell that everything was a little hard for her too, just by the way her chest was rising and falling with every breath she took.
“Would you maybe care to tell me,” he started as he began to slowly walk towards her. “What is it that I cannot buy?”
Michelle seemed to be rooted to the ground because she didn’t move.
“Economies for starters,” she said in a small voice and he shook his head.
“That’s not true. People buy countries all the time.”
He was moving closer and closer, taking very small steps.
“S*x,” Michelle said and he shrugged.
“Please… I know you can do better.”
By that time, he was standing right in front of her.
“Love,” she whispered and he nodded.

“Are you sure?” Michelle shrugged.
“You can buy someone’s act; people acting like they love another person, but what they’re really after would be the money… So, that’s all you would be buying. An act.”
“You don’t say,” he said as he leaned against the counter.
His hand brushed against her own making an excited chill run down her spine. She looked at her hand and wondered if she should pull it away. The thought didn’t last long. She looked up at him, looking right into his eyes. He was doing the same and he felt like his blood was boiling.
