It’d be one hell of a commute if she continued to teach in Portland. Besides, why was she even thinking about it when she hadn’t been specifically invited to stay? Maybe this whole situation would be temporary, and then she would be forced to return to her meaningless life again.
“Are you mad at me, Amelia?” Joe wanted to know. He cupped her chin and tilted up her face so she had to look into his eyes.
“No, I’m not mad,” she said. “Not at you, anyway. I know you’re right, and you just want what is best for me. I’m just trying to figure out what’s really best for me in general.”
“Because you hate your job, the city, and the uncertainty of how much longer you can exist all alone?” he asked, drawing her into his arms so that her computer was pressed intimately between them.
“How do you know me so well, Joe?” she wanted to know. “You know more about me than I know about myself.”

“I’m the delivery guy,” he smirked. “I meet people all day every day. Learn to read them well in a job like that, you know? There’s a melancholy in your eyes that I’d love to erase forever.”
“Mm,” she nodded. “I’d like that.”
“Come on, let’s go,” he said, keeping one arm around her as he used the other to guide her towards the door. “Skylar and I can come back later to get the rest of your things.”
They drove back to Joe and Skylar’s cabin in silence. At some point Amelia had placed her hand on his thigh, and a sort of longing sparked between them.
