The next day she nervously sat with Tara, who had also taken the day off, in the waiting room of her doctor.

The first thing they did was take a urine test which came back positive. Next just to be certain the doctor performed a sonogram.

“Congratulations,” he said. “You’re having a baby. You’re roughly about seven weeks,” he said with a broad grin.

Brit burst into tears.

“I’ll give you a moment,” Dr. Green said awkwardly.

Brit couldn’t believe it. Her mind raced. What on earth was she going to do? She couldn’t have a baby. She had just landed her dream job. She wasn’t even in a relationship.  One thing was certain. She needed to call Cliff. What would she even say? The last time she had seen him she had crept away before dawn. Any attempt that he had made to reach her she had shot down.

Tara drove her home in silence. Brit wasn’t in the mood for conversation and Tara knew her best friend well so she let her think without asking her questions. She hugged Brit at the door and assured her that she was just a phone call away. Once Brittany got inside she laid on her bed and cried for about an hour. She thought long and hard about her predicament. She had no idea what she wanted to do but she needed to tell Cliff. It was the right thing to do. After a few more hours of thinking and crying she fell asleep finally.

The next morning, she awoke hoping it was all a bad dream. She groaned when she realized it wasn’t. She picked up her cell phone and searched for his number. She finally found it in the call log. She took a deep breath and pressed dial.

“Please go to voicemail, please go to voicemail,” she whispered.

She was batting zero however because he picked up after the third ring.

“Hello,” he said into the receiver.

“Cliff,” she managed to squeak out. “This is Brit. Brittany Spencer. Tara’s friend?”

Cliff laughed.

“I know who you are Brit. Well this is a surprise. How are you?” he asked.

“I’m…listen Cliff I was wondering if you wanted to meet for coffee?” she inquired uncertainly.

“Coffee? Sure. I don’t have any plans this weekend,” he suggested.

“I was thinking today,” Brit replied.

“Today? Is everything… okay Brit?” he questioned.

“Yes. Everything is fine. Can you make it?”

“Sure. There is a café near my office. Do you remember how to get here?”

“Yes,” she said softly. “I can be there in two hours.”

“I’ll be there,” he said.
