Lights? What lights? I tried to figure out what he meant, but in a moment I understood. Donte opened the door, causing a flash of light to hit me. It was almost too much at the moment, and a part of me felt like my eyes were going to burn. Donte shook his head.

“You’ll get used to it. You’ve changed, so the light sensitivity will be less. Let’s move fast though,” he said.

I nodded and followed his lead. He held my hand as we ran down a couple of halls. I was worried about the sounds our footsteps made, but there weren’t any guards around. It seemed strange, but I guess that’s what happens when you’re listening to the leader of a bunch of vampires. I could hear the droll of a voice in the distance.

“That’s where Raphael is. There’s an underground pathway in the kitchen, but first we have to go past the hall where everyone is,” he explained.

“Sh*t. Do you think we can?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. But it’s worth a shot,” he said.

There was a small sound of footsteps, causing Donte and me to hide. We hid behind a desk, watching as the guard looked around. The guard checked out the place in a curious manner.

“What was that sound I just heard?” he said. He moved closer to where Donte and I were, but we were silent. Hell, I didn’t even breathe when the guy was hovering right over me. I knew it wasn’t going to work out if I did. The guy was puzzled, but he moved back to his station.

Donte nodded at me as we moved once again. We went down the hall towards the entrance of the guest hall. I looked at the place. There were about 3400 vampires in the room, all of them listening to Raphael like he was a priest or something. If it weren’t for the fact that Raphael sickened me, I would’ve thought this was strange. I can’t believe people actually listened to a man like that!

“Are these vampire sheep or something?” I whispered.

Donte shook his head. “Nope. Just luckless fools who think Raphael is the best person out there for the job. They think he’s the most fit to run the vampire community. Oh how far they are from the truth,” Donte replied.

The thought sickened me. All of the rogue vampires looked up to this man as the leader. I don’t get that mentality, and I guess I never will. We started to move along the walls, both of us trying to be as quiet as possible. The people all listened to Raphael with intent, none of them looking over at what was happening along the walls. They were all sitting down, and it looked like all of the guards and servants were nearby. Donte moved my body down so that we could move behind the guards, allowing them to not see us.

“And so, I’m glad you’re all able to come today to this fine celebration. I’m happy to have you, and we’ll go over the plans to help build a stronger vampire community, including a secret that I’m ready to share with the world,” Raphael started. His voice was so fake that it made me want to puke. But I didn’t want to think about that at the moment. I had to get the hell out of here.

We made our way over to the side, listening to Raphael ramble on about what he’s going to do for the community and how nice it’ll be to have law and order around these parts. Yeah, if he’s considered law and order then get me the hell out of here. He also discussed the idea of vampires being the master race, and how all people should be turned into vampires so they can follow his footsteps. Ugh, this whole thing sounded like bullsh*t.

As soon as we made it to the side, I breathed a sigh of relief. One of the guards turned around, immediately making eye contact with me. I flinched. This wasn’t good. Donte tried to pull me along, but I was frozen with fear.

“Hey what are you doing out of your cell! Get her!” Raphael said. The guards immediately responded, running after us. A couple of the rogue vampires looked at us too, moving swiftly towards us. I was scared sh*tless, but before I could do anything Donte grabbed me, holding me in his arms.

At first, I felt embarrassed. Why was he doing this? And why did he think this was a good idea? Soon though, he was running with me. The guards chased after us, but Donte was able to move faster. He made it down the hall, but there were two guard vampires lunging at us. I buried my head into his chest, afraid of what I was going to see. Donte delivered two swift kicks to the guys, causing them to bowl over in pain. Donte and I used that chance to escape. He carried me to the kitchen, grabbing a knife in the process. When we got to the secret passage her put me down.

“Do you think you can run?” he asked.

I looked behind me. The vampires were catching up at a crazy pace. I nodded briskly.

“Yes. Let’s just get the hell out of here,” I replied.

Donte nodded. He pulled me towards him and then cut the door open with the knife. Apparently, he didn’t have keys for the lock, but cutting it was enough for him. He pulled the door open and then pushed me through. He followed afterwards, closing the door.

It was a tiny crawlspace, but I tried to move as fast as possible. I didn’t know if this was going to work. I mean, they were catching up to us at a wicked pace, and I was just trying to hold my ground. But I had to keep going, I just had to. I moved faster and faster, digging my nails into the ground and using it to push me forward. I wasn’t going to be food for these guys, that’s for sure.

I could hear them behind us. I heard a couple of the guards struggle to get in. They weren’t fast enough, but I knew they would probably be waiting for us at the exit. I got scared, but I had faith in Donte. He seemed to know what he was doing.
