Chapter 3

It was the night of the breakout. I waited in my cell for Donte to come. It looked like the guard change would happen in an hour. I had to hold out until then, but it did make me nervous. Was this really going to work? Was I going to be able to finally get out of here?

Being a vampire felt weird. I didn’t mind it, but it wasn’t what I imagined my life to be like. I thought I was going to live a normal life as a legal secretary until I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore. Now I was about to leave, but it still felt weird that I didn’t know if I could go back to my normal life. I don’t know what happened with my apartment since I’ve been in this cell, and I have no idea what Ryan is thinking right now. I’m surprised he didn’t try calling the police yet. Of course, they probably don’t know a damn thing about vampires, so it would be foolish.

I waited in the cell. I was growing anxious. But then I saw a light turn on in the distance. It was the hallway light from above. It looked like the guard was changing, but I wasn’t sure. I heard a small murmuring of voices, but I didn’t know what they were saying. I hope this wasn’t about me.

I decided to wait. The best thing to do at this point would be to just wait and see. Donte was going to come, I was sure of it. He told me that he already made plans with Raphael to be on guard that night. Raphael was shocked to hear Donte so eager to watch the cell, but he agreed to it. Donte needed to come soon. I was growing more nervous as time passed.

I heard a small sound of string music in the distance. It was probably from the party. I didn’t even know what the mansion looked like. All I knew is that this area was dark and dreary. I missed how the sun looked, but then again I couldn’t even look at that now due to my new powers.

Honestly, I sometimes wished I didn’t run away that night. Sometimes I wished that I could’ve just avoided them, or at least waited a moment before they saw me. But then again, there was something about Donte that made me happy. He was a good guy, and he didn’t seem to be on their side. He was a kindred spirit, and he was willing to work with me. That was more than enough. The rest of the guards treated me like a prisoner, but Donte was the friendliest of them all. Plus, he was handsome as well.

I didn’t know what to think of him. He was admirable, and I liked him. But at the same time, I didn’t know if I could truly befriend him. At least not until we got out of here. I was still scared that he was on their side. I didn’t think he was, but then again I knew the man was full of surprises.

I heard the door close and the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Was it him? Did he really want to see me? I saw the figure move closer. The man took out a small flashlight to help me see.

It was Donte. But he looked worried.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Security is being a pain in the ass tonight. I’ve been trying to get down here for the last hour, but Raphael keeps distracting me. He keeps sending me on these random little errands that I don’t need to be doing right now. I don’t know if he knows about the plan, but if he does we might be in trouble,” he stated.

I was terrified. I didn’t want Raphael to know about this. He was supposed to be at a party, and we were supposed to use this time for sneaking out. I felt like this was getting riskier by the second. I took a deep breath. Worst comes to worst, we bust out of here and run.

“I think we should go for it. I mean, will we have any other chance later on?” I asked.

Donte looked at me and shook his head. “Not if you think you’ll be getting out anytime soon. Raphael wants to keep you around as his mistress, and I know that once he does that, there’s no way you’re going to be getting out without a fight. It’s best if we take our chance tonight. Even though Raphael might be suspicious, it’s better to just take a chance now than to hope for something else later on.”

I agreed with him. There was no way in hell I was going to have s*x with that bas*ard. I liked Ryan, and I was with him. I didn’t want to be with that ugly man.

“Well let’s get out of here then. What are they doing right now?” I asked.

“They’re doing an introductory waltz at the moment. Let’s leave in about thirty minutes. I told Raphael and the rest of the guards I would guard for the rest of the night. Some of them thought it was odd, but none of them tried to fight me. They know better than to do that,” he explained.

I was happy about that. We could take our time. “So when would it be best to leave?” I asked.

“In about thirty minutes. Raphael will be giving the welcome speech. When they do that, most of the guards will be watching him in order to ensure his safety. That’s when we’ll make our escape,” Donte explained.

I agreed with that. I knew Donte wouldn’t leave me hanging. We waited around until the music ended and people cheered. Donte drabbed the keys to the cell and started to unlock it. I was worried about how smoothly this would go, but I gave the man the benefit of the doubt. He seemed to know what he was doing, even though I was scared of what would happen next. I had to trust him, I was still nervous about this.

The cell lock clicked, allowing me to leave. I walked out, and immediately Donte grabbed my hand. He looked at me with a serious gaze.

“The lights will hurt you, but you’re going to have to continue. Just follow my lead and you’ll be fine,” he explained.
