Donte was silent. Did I strike a nerve with him?
“To be honest, I don’t know if you’ll ever get out hun. I don’t know if he’ll let you go. I’ve been wanting to get out for a long time, but it’s been no use. I’ve always been seen, and when the guards caught me they would punish me. I’ve been a good boy for a few years, so I’ve been able to ascend the ranks to where I am now. But I am moral support if you ever need someone to talk to,” he said.
I nodded. I felt bad for Donte. He looked miserable. I know that he didn’t want to be here anymore. I could see it in his eyes. He’s probably been stuck here since he was turned. I wondered what he thought about being a vampire.
We spent the next couple of hours talking. When it was time for the guard to change, I got some other guy. He wasn’t as nice, but he didn’t seem as mean as Raphael. Raphael was cold, but this one just liked to make me feel awkward and in the spotlight. Oh how I yearned for Donte to come back.
Over the next couple of weeks, we formed a bond. I was excited when Donte would come back, and we would always talk about different things. Apparently, Donte was a reporter before he was turned. He got turned right before World War I started, and he saw all of that go down. He told me what it was like to live longer. He seemed unhappy in a way. I could tell that he thought the vampire life wasn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.
I started feeling better. My strength was coming back, and I felt alive once again. Maybe this would work out. Maybe I would be able to be a strong vampire. If I had to serve in an army as a peon, then so be it. I would work my way up the ranks to where Donte was. Maybe then we could form a bond with each other that Raphael couldn’t break. But I highly doubted that.
What I wanted more than anything though, was to leave. I started feeling better, and Donte noticed. He looked at me with a curious glance one day, and it was definitely something that I wanted to ask about. I knew he was thinking about something, but the question was what.
“Are you okay Donte? You seem distant,” I said. I hated making assumptions about people, but I could see that he was upset about something.
“Oh nothing. Just Raphael and I had a talk today. He wants to impregnate you. He said that he sees you as a fit person to bear his child. I was disgusted, and I tried to tell him that you would be fit for the army, but he refused. He told me that you were one of the strongest females we had. Most didn’t take this little time to turn. He wants to use you, and I’m sure he’ll make you pop out his vampire spawn until you can’t anymore,” Donte said.
When I heard those words, I was scared sh*tless. I didn’t want to be some woman that Raphael would stick his dick into. I had a job and a life. I wanted to go back to that. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my days popping out children for a scumbag like that.
“I’m not doing that. There is no way in hell,” I said.
“I tried to reason with him, but he’s not budging. I may be a part of his guard, but I don’t want to continue this life. I’m sick of it. I was changed against my will. I didn’t want to be a vampire. I wanted to die. I’ve had to serve that bas*ard since I changed, and I’m sick of it,” he admitted.
So he didn’t want to be a part of this man’s charade. I know that Raphael was bad, but did he really think he would be able to get away with this? Did he really think that making me his mistress would do any good? I would still hate him, and I would probably want to go away. I had to get out of this before he was too late.
“Fu*k. Is there any way we can avoid it?” I asked.
Donte looked around. I didn’t get why he was so scared, but I could tell that something happened. I looked at him with a curious glance before he motioned for me to move to the edge of the cell.
I moved closer, honestly wondering what he had in mind. I didn’t know if there was any way. The cell was strong, and even with my vampire strength, I couldn’t even make a dent. I tried to use my fangs to sink into the bars, but that didn’t work. He looked at me with a serious glance and grabbed my hands.
“There is one way, but I do want to make sure you’re okay with it as well. It might require us to sacrifice a whole lot, and I don’t know if either of us is ready for that,” he said.
“What kind of sacrifice” I asked.
“We might have to be on the run for a while. But I do have a plan to break out. I think we can leave together and then make a run for it. We’ll try to find a place that can help us. Plus, I’ve also heard there are people who know how to turn vampires back. We were both turned against our will, and I’m sure that we would both like to get the hell back to our normal lives,” he whispered.
Wait there were people who could help us? Would they really do something like that?
“So there are people who can help,” I replied.
“Yes. I’ve heard rumors over the years of where they are, but we need to tread lightly. I don’t want to go there right away. We’ll have to lie low, but once we get out of here the rest will be easier,” he admitted.

I didn’t know if I could trust this guy. I mean sh*t, he’s one of them. But I saw the hurt expression on Donte’s face. He didn’t want to subject me to that life. He wanted to get me out of it.
“Do you think we can leave?” I asked.
“Only if everything goes smoothly. Next Friday there is a party, and I could request to be the guard down here. We’ll sneak you out through the hallways. There is an underground passageway in the drawing room, so when we get there we can use that. The amount of guards that night will be low, and I think there is a strong chance of us escaping. What do you say?” he asked.
I thought about it. It seemed like an enticing offer. There was a lot on the line, but I was ready to risk it. I nodded as I looked at him. A smile appeared on my face.
“Let’s do it. I’m ready to get out of here.”
