He smiled a little, one corner of his mouth lifting as he turned his arm out of her grasp and closed his hand around her wrist, holding her fast but gently. “You called out to me. You spoke my name, over and over again, calling to me.”

She remembered her dream. She tried to speak, but could only stammer softly. “…but I… I didn’t mean to. I was dreaming… I didn’t…” she trailed off, confused as to how he could have heard her in a dream, how he got into her house, and how he was even standing there with her in the first place.

“You called out to me because you need me, you want me. More than anyone ever has, Claire. I can feel it. You are not alone. I want you, too. I need you, Claire, and I don’t need anything.”

His green eyes moved over her face as if he was fixing that moment in his memory forever, and he leaned in so close to her that they were barely more than a breath apart.

“Do you want me?” he asked in a hoarse sounding whisper. “I’ll stay here with you tonight if you do. Tell me… Claire… do you want me?”

Leaning back, she looked at his skin and stared, pushing his hair back all the way. There on the rear of his neck, just off the side where his longer hair in the back had been hiding it, was the strangest scar she had ever seen. It was the healed tissue of a claw mark that had been deep when it was cut into him.

She gasped and laid her hands on his shoulder, looking at it in shock. “What is that? Is that a claw mark? It’s enormous! What happened?”

He was still looking away from her. Nicholas turned his head slowly and looked at her again, and she saw something strange and wild in his eyes that she had never seen before. A shiver moved through her and he spoke quietly.
