He had gone to great lengths to keep her from finding out what their destination was. He had led her to a private jet – she had asked him, jokingly, if he’d bought that, too, and he had told her that it was just chartered. But if she’d like to buy it, it was hers, he’d added.
Alan didn’t do anything by half measures. When he decided that he would do everything he could to earn a second chance with her, he really meant it.
When they landed, she knew.
They were in what she claimed was the most romantic city in the world, and she would still stand by it.
She turned to him and smiled.
“I should’ve known.”
Alan grinned. He found such joy in making her smile.
The week he had spent without her hadn’t been worth living. He had spent almost every minute of that week begging Violet to let him see her daughter once more, to let her give him one more chance.
It had been the greatest achievement of his life to get her to agree. It had been worth it.
Grace made him better.

Finally, he took her hand and looked into her eyes.
“Grace, I have something to tell you.”
Grace might have felt trepidation at those words a few days ago. But now, she smiled. She knew there would be nothing bad.
“I love you.”
Her heart just stopped. Her mind went blank. He had never said the words before.
“Alan…”
“I love you. I want to love you for the rest of my life. We’ll renew our vows, if you like. But I want you to know that I love you.”
Grace smiled at him, and as she had done one evening when everything had gone wrong, she walked to him and sat on his lap.

Twenty minutes later, they were bundled up in robes and back at the table.
“Boy, dessert is great,” said Grace.
“Do you even know what you’re eating?”
“No idea. Some kind of cake. Cake is good,” said Grace.
