She felt her ardor chill as Alan disentangled himself from her arms and rolled away from her.
Grace felt more bereft than she had ever felt before when he rolled off her and away from her. She had never felt rejection more keenly.
Don’t be silly, she told herself. She was making too much of it.
They had just made love. They had just made wonderful, magnificent love. Nothing would diminish the value of that, she insisted.
As she watched, Alan’s breathing came back to normal, becoming level and steady again. Slowly, he pushed himself up and sat up.
Turning, he looked at her, and the look in his eyes chilled her to the bone.
“Alan?” she asked, her voice quivering.
“That shouldn’t have happened,” he said, and his voice was flat and emotionless. It chilled her even more.
Grace felt as if she might never be warm again.
She pulled the covers up over her, feeling suddenly ashamed of her naked curves.

“This shouldn’t have happened,” he said again.
