Chapter 1

Zoey Martins looked down at the cards in her hands, then up at the man who sat in front of her. She narrowed her eyes to slits as she watched him carefully, trying to find the merest hint on his strong poker face. All her life playing poker, she had always thought that black men were the hardest to crack. The past week in Singapore had told her that her folks had nothing on Chinese men. They had to have the best poker face in the whole wide world; she’d know. She had visited a casino in just about every continent she has been in; Asia was the seventh.

The man in front of her had the typical Chinese look: black hair, small eyes, a petite nose and thin lips. He was goddamn attractive. Gosh. She had had to stop herself from ogling him several times. It was a mystery how she hadn’t lost the game yet. Her brain was half there. Even now, she had a feeling she was lying to herself, about searching for a hint on that stoic face. A part of her knew very well that she was simply checking him out, again… for the hundredth time that night.

Not that anyone would blame her; she had never seen a man look so gorgeous. She hadn’t known that this country had men who could drive a grown woman mad with their hotness. He was the reason why she had decided to join this table, after all. She had been cruising through the casino, as she often did; trying to decide which table had the weakest players, when he had caught her eyes.

Her feet had come to a stop immediately and all on their own. Then, she had struck a pose that had been undeniably s*xy and in that sultry voice she knew drove men mad, had asked “May I join you, gentlemen?”

Yes. There had been no lady at the table. Just seven men. Six of whom had looked up, their eyes revealing all the lewd thoughts that were running through their minds, as they eagerly nodded, happy grins on their faces. So, another chair had been brought for her, and she had shared a secret smile with the waitress who knew of the reputation she had managed to build in four days, as she slid down. With one thousand dollars, she bought in and the game began.

The seventh, as you would guess, was this man who had all her attention. He also happened to be the last man standing. All that time other men had been staring at her hungrily, he had simply looked up – only for a fraction of second, before looking down at his cards, again.

If Zoey ever claimed that it hadn’t burned, she would be nothing but a liar and her pants would probably catch fire. Only, tonight, she was wearing a tight black dress that hugged her figure in all the right places. Straps held it on her shoulders, and a thigh-high dangerous slit graced her left leg. The silver stilettos she had chosen to wear raised the entire look to a solid 100. Of course, with the help of the blonde extensions she had in and the sultry look her artist of a friend, Mariah, had given her tonight. Yet, looking like a goddess, this utterly impossible man had only spared her all of ten looks in the past two hours that she had been at this table.

It was very discomfiting to say the very least, especially since she could not take her eyes off of him. Snob much? It was more reason why she had to win this game, so she could laugh in his face. All of that seriousness, gone to waste. Ha-ha!

“Your call,” she said after a long moment of silence. Where was his mind at?

“I’d rather raise,” he replied in that exotic Asian accent, as he pushed more chips further.

Her eyes roamed over the chips and she did a quick calculation. So far, they had over $15,000 in the game. With this new raise, all that was at stake was all of $30,000. Alright, this man had money-money. If she won this game, the expenses of this girls’ trip would be fully covered, and she’d even have extra to make her account feel as though she blessed it, not took a dip. Hell yeah.

Looking at the cards in her hands once more, she tried to decide if this was the sensible thing to do. She had already won $8000 from the first hand. In her hands, she had a pair of kings and one ace. A kicker and an out, depending on how she chose to play them. If he had a king, queen, or even two aces, she would win this game.

There was no way to tell, and this man was as calm and solid like a rock. He looked as though he knew with all certainty that he had won this. Not to mention, the raise was a very cocky move.

How long had she been playing this game? Long enough to know that people made bold moves, not only when they were certain they would win, but more, when they were afraid to lose. It was reverse psychology. It would scare the opponent – in many cases, make them fold… well, she was not naive in this game and his biggest mistake yet might be undermining her.

With a smirk, she made her decision… call his bluff.

Pushing her chips forward, her smirk widened. “All in.”

For the first time that night, he looked up at her. Really looked up. And this time, it lasted for longer than a fraction of a second. She swore when she was immediately held captive by his electric green eyes. Everything else slipped away; the table, the game, the entire casino around them, and she just sat there, mesmerized. A glint of amusement flashed through his eyes before he looked away after what seemed like an eternity, finally releasing her.

She came up for air, though she tried to make it as inconspicuous as possible. Sadly, the smirk that settled on his lips told her that she had failed miserably. Darn him! He obviously knew the effect he had on her, and that was his sly attempt to destabilize her. She hadn’t even realized she had been holding her breath. Oh, she’d show him.

Royally pissed, she forgot about how attractive he was, how those eyes had pulled her in, and ultimately put all her focus in the game. In her line of work, she met many attractive men – very attractive men – every now and then. She was not going to become a mush over one overly arrogant asshole.
