Chapter 1
The Present
“You look like a woman with something on her mind. What is it going to cost me this time? A mind-numbing three hours sitting around a table with Jessica Millwood? Or sitting and listening to your aunt discuss her current ailments in detail?” Pulling up a chair, Reginald Tanner sat across from his wife of fifteen years, his tawny golden eyes twinkling in amusement.
Jacinth gave him her full attention and felt the familiar love blossoming inside her chest. Her dark brown eyes wandered over his thick dark hair and handsome face.
He was forty-five years old, and other than a few streaks of gray; he still looked very much like the man who had stormed into his dad’s office all those years ago and changed her life forever. And she loved him even more than she did back then.
“Something on my face, darling?” He teased.
“I was just thinking of how long we have been married.”
He gave her a horrified look. “Don’t tell me you are considering leaving me for a younger man.”
“I just might. I get offers every single day.” She tapped an elegant finger against her cheek. “Just today, while having lunch with Kelly and Leesa, Mark Lindstrom walked over to our table and asked for my hand in marriage.”
His eyebrows descended into a scowl. “I will have to find him and rearrange his face.”
“No need,” she said sweetly. “I told him that I loved my husband; he is a rock star in bed.”
His shout of laughter echoed over the patio and scattered the birds enjoying the seeds provided. “Rock star?”
“Should I have said dynamite?”
“Rock star will do.” His expression became sober. “What is it, my love?”
“I was made an offer today.”
“Another one?”
She nodded, peeking at him through her long, curly lashes.
“Let’s hear it.”
“I am not certain you are going to like it.” She prevaricated.
“As long as it does not involve you with another man, then I am open to whatever it is.”
“I was asked to write a book.”
He stared at her in surprise. “I had no idea writing was something you wanted to consider. When you gave up working at the company, you said you first wanted to concentrate on being a mother to our children and the various charities you oversee.”
“This is a special book; I think it’s a splendid idea.”
“What genre?”
“Romance.” Her smile widened at the disgusted look on his face. “And your expression tells me what you think of that idea.”
“There so many other topics- “
“About us.”
He blinked at her. “Pardon?”
“You are the first member of that exclusive club of yours who broke the rules by marrying a woman of color.”
“Darling, you know I love you- “
“I thought you adored me.”
He shook his head wryly at her attempt to distract him and continued. “Our relationship is not for public scrutiny.”
“The girls and I were talking. Several magazines have hinted at the club’s history and how far it has come since it opened its doors over a hundred years ago. And we spoke about how much influence we, as women of color, are making in society.” She gave him a pleading look. “I want to do this, darling.”
He stared at her, taking in her cocoa brown complexion, the exquisite shape of her face, and the fact that she was forty-three years old and still had that girlish look about her. Her body was slender, her muscles well-toned because she worked out even harder than he did. She was the mother of a fourteen-year-old boy and a twelve-year-old daughter and did not look like she had ever been through labor.
Her thick dark brown hair was pinned on top of her head, exposing her long, graceful neck. The mouth he adored and spent an inordinate amount of time on was curved in a gentle smile. He adored her.
Their initial meeting had been stormy, but that had quickly culminated in a passion that had swept them along with an intensity he was still trying to make sense of.
“Darling?”
He shook his head as he realized that he had been lost in memories. “You have been twisting me around your little finger since I met you.”
A disrespectful snort was her response. “That’s not how I remember it.”

He was still breathing hard, his chest rising and falling in rapid succession. His skin was coated with a fine sheen of sweat, and his body was still shuddering. Tipping his head down, he chuckled wryly as he stared at the woman curled into his arms and wondered about her power over him, not for the first time.
“You are going to end up killing me one day.”
“I could say the same about you.” Her fingers were tangled in the hairs of his chest, her body mellow and feeling fabulous after the hectic bout of lovemaking.
“I am not as young as I was.” He pointed out.
“Then I guess I am going to have to find a younger man after all—one who is probably in his twenties,” she said teasingly as she stared at him.
“Unless you want to see me commit murder.”
“It would just be a side piece- “
“Enough.” He ordered gruffly, making her laugh. Even though she was joking, and they both knew it, her husband could not stand the thought of another man being close to her. A few years ago, she had worked closely with the owner of a children’s home, and Reginald had come inside their drawing room to see them with their heads close together. He had walked out without greeting them.
